Capability3
2.8-liter VR6 six-cylinder
Every 1997–2000 EuroVan has the 2.8-liter VR6, rated at 140 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, with a 4-speed automatic driving the front wheels.
201-hp 24-valve VR6
For 2001, Volkswagen gave the EuroVan a four-valve-per-cylinder VR6 rated at 201 hp and 181 lb-ft, up from 140 hp. It drives the front wheels through a 4-speed automatic.
Water, shore power and a coach battery
The Camper carries a 12-gallon fresh water tank and an 8-gallon waste tank, plugs into 110-volt campsite power, and runs its lights and appliances from a separate coach battery.
Safety2
Stability and traction control standard
From 2001, every EuroVan came with Volkswagen's Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) traction control, which help keep a tall, heavy van steady on slick roads.
Dual front airbags and ABS
From 1999 on, the EuroVan has driver and front passenger airbags and anti-lock brakes as standard equipment.
Space4
MV: face-to-face seats and a bench bed
This van is an MV. Two seats behind the front row face backward toward a three-person rear bench, and that bench folds down into a bed.
Weekender package
Volkswagen's Weekender package for the MV adds a pop-up roof with a two-person bed, screens for the two sliding windows, a refrigerator under a rear-facing seat and a second battery.
Pop-up roof that sleeps two
This van's pop-up roof lifts to make a bed for two up top. Fold the rear bench down into a second bed and it sleeps four.
Full Camper kitchen by Winnebago
Winnebago fitted the EuroVan Camper with a two-burner propane range, a stainless sink, a 2-cubic-foot refrigerator that runs on propane, 110 or 12 volts, and a propane furnace with a thermostat.
Good to know2
VR6 uses timing chains
Both versions of the VR6 drive their camshafts with chains, so there is no timing belt to replace on a schedule. Ask us what this van's service records show.
Camper gear worth a check
The Camper's propane system, refrigerator and furnace are now over 20 years old. Winnebago's manual says propane work belongs with a qualified LP service center. Ask us what has been checked on this van.
Specs are the manufacturer's figures for this generation. Equipment varies by trim and year, so ask us about anything that matters to you on a specific car.
