Capability2
269 hp V6 with a 5-speed automatic
This RAV4 has the 3.5-liter V6, rated at 269 hp and 246 lb-ft of torque. Toyota quoted 0 to 60 mph in under seven seconds, so highway merges feel relaxed.
On-demand 4WD with a lock button
An electronically controlled coupling sends power to the rear wheels when the road calls for it. A dash button locks the split near 55/45 for snow or mud. There is no low-range gear.
Safety3
Stability control on every one
Every 2006–2012 RAV4 came with anti-lock brakes and stability control. Stability control helps keep the SUV headed where you steer on wet, icy or gravel roads.
Side and curtain airbags standard
From 2007, every RAV4 came with front seat side airbags plus curtain airbags for the first and second rows. The curtains are designed to deploy in a rollover too.
Backup camera
Toyota made a backup camera available starting in 2009, often with the picture built into the rearview mirror. It helps you check behind the SUV before you reverse.
Space2
Fold-flat third row for two
This RAV4 has the optional 50/50 split third row, offered on Base and Limited models. It seats two more people and folds flat under the cargo floor when you need the space.
Side-hinged rear door
The rear door swings open to the side instead of lifting up. Most carry a full-size spare on the door; some Sport models use run-flat tires instead. With the seats folded there is 73 cu ft of room.
Tech1
Hands-free Bluetooth calling
Pair your phone to take calls without picking it up. Toyota offered Bluetooth on this generation with the available JBL audio system and steering wheel audio controls.
Good to know2
Timing chain, no belt to replace
The 2.4, 2.5 and 3.5-liter engines all drive their camshafts with a chain, so there is no scheduled timing belt job. Regular oil changes help keep the chain healthy.
Oil use on the 2.4-liter engine
Toyota extended coverage (program ZE7) for excess oil use on certain 2006–2008 RAV4s with this engine. That coverage has ended. Ask us what this car's records show, and check the oil level between changes.
