Model guide · 2nd generation (NHW20)
2004–2009 Toyota Prius
The second-generation Prius is the five-door liftback that made the shape famous, with a 1.5-liter engine and Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. People buy it for frugal driving, a practical hatch and a cabin the EPA rates as midsize.

Capability3
Hybrid Synergy Drive
A 76 hp 1.5L gas engine and a 67 hp electric motor combine for 110 hp. A boost converter raises motor voltage up to 500 volts, and the battery recharges as you drive and brake, with nothing to plug in.
Electric power at low speeds
On light throttle at low speeds the car can run on the electric motor with the gas engine off, and the engine shuts off at stops. The A/C compressor is electric and runs off the hybrid battery.
Touring Edition handling
The Touring Edition, added for 2007, has a European-tuned suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels, HID headlamps and fog lamps.
Safety2
ABS and front airbags standard
Anti-lock brakes and front airbags are standard. Front side airbags and side curtain airbags were optional on 2004–2006 cars, so ask us whether this one has them.
Side and curtain airbags standard
From 2007, front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags are standard on every Prius.
Space1
Liftback with room for five
The five-door liftback seats five and holds about 16 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seat. The EPA classes it as a midsize car.
Tech2
Electronic key and power button
Every car has an electronic key and a power button in place of a twist ignition. The optional Smart Entry & Start lets you unlock and start the car with the key in your pocket.
Touch screen energy monitor
A touch screen high on the center dash shows the energy monitor and fuel use, and it runs the audio and climate controls.
